And go again.

This time next week we will be in Lanzarote for my next attempt at a one-a-day Deca (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26 mile run, every day). This will be the forth time I have tried to do this and there is a good chance it won’t be the last… Why? Because it’s really fucking hard, that’s why.

I’m at my most experienced regarding Decas at this moment. I’ve been there, messed it up, messed it up again, done it, got the t-shirt etc. But this means there’s no bullshit, no ‘gonna smash this’ and no bravado. I’m just going to give it everything I have. And hope it’s enough this time.

I’m scared of failing again, of course. But when I started 2017, I told myself to get real comfortable with failure. Because when you’re putting yourself out there, trying to do really hard stuff, you’re gonna fuck it up a fair amount. Can’t hack failure, looking stupid and feeling like shit?  Don’t do it then.

So why Lanzarote? Because it’s bloody freezing in the UK in December!  But the actual reason I couldn’t wait till next summer (which would have been sensible, right?) is because my son is away for Xmas, which means I have some guilt-free weeks and what better way to fill them then with a Deca.

Why a solo challenge? After the Swiss Deca issue with the IUTA, I have come to terms with the fact that any triathlon I enter, my result will not really count as an official finish. This is because I have to use a recumbent bike for at least 50% of the cycle section. Does this piss me off? Just a little… (see below) but there’s nothing I can do about it and it doesn’t change the fact that I want to finish a Deca.

Oh and to those out there who still think that riding a recumbent is ‘an easy option’ go ahead and spend a shit ton of cash you don’t have, on a bike you don’t actually want, which is fucking hard to ride and you will fall off on a lot of corners (Decas are on multi lap courses, remember). Hills are an absolute joke and EVERYONE STARES AT YOU (children laugh, dogs will bark and don’t even get me started on horses…) Ok, sorry. Rant over.

Anyway… Myself and Matt Brown will fly out this Sunday and we have a day and a half to sort the courses, buy some food and generally get sorted. The swim is in a man-made bay, (Playa Dorada Beach) which I hope will ensure that I can swim without issues everyday. The sea temp will be around 18 degrees. The bike and run courses are yet to be finalised and will need to be short, flap loops as per normal Decas. We hope to use the villa as a base, which is just up the road from the swim.

Everyday will be recorded with various Garmins, because although this isn’t an ‘official’ race, it’s important to me that I can show that I have done the distance. Matt will be updating Facebook throughout the days / nights with my progress, whilst also supporting me. Lucky boy…

It ain’t gonna be fast, it ain’t gonna be pretty, but I really hope I can get it done this time.
